World's Game

Well with the World Cup Finals quickly approaching I found it hard not to focus this edition of our monthly correspondence on that of the world's game.  So here are a few facts and tid-bits regarding that of the World Cup and its' history so you will be able to speak confidently if it comes up in conversation.

  • Did you know that through 2006, there have only been 7 countries that have won the World Cup since 1930? (With the event not contested in 1942 and 1946 due to the 2nd World War) They are: Brazil (5); Italy (4); Germany (3); Argentina (2); Uruguay (2); France (1) and England (1)
  • Most widely viewed sporting event in the world with an estimated 715.1 million people tuning into the 2006 final between Italy and France
  • What the heck does FIFA stand for? Federation International Football Association
  • South Africa was the host nation of this year's event and is the first host nation not to advance out of the Group Play
  • Brazil is the only country to have played in every World Cup tournament
  • If you like to know what the odds makers have to think, (according to some random sports site, not endorsing gambling, just to give you an idea of who may win it all..) Brazil 10/3; Spain 4/1; Argentina 9/2; and Netherlands 13/2
  • 2014 World Cup will be held in Brazil
  • The trophy itself, or the new trophy as of 1970, was designed by, Silvio Gazzaniga.  He described it as the following "The lines spring out from the base, rising in spirals, stretching out to receive the world. From the remarkable dynamic tensions of the compact body of the sculpture rise the figures of two athletes at the stirring moment of victory."

So if you ever find yourself on some random game show or in the midst of a trivia battle, I hope that you feel a bit more versed in the category of the World Cup.

Now onto the conclusion of yet another big event..

RAC Olympics Recap

Well, what can I say but to thank you all that made this year's event nothing less than a success.  Special thanks to Michael with Six Pack Sports, everyone that came out from Tommy Knocker Brewery, JD Wallum and State Farm Insurance and of course to all 18 teams for coming out and competing making this year the best yet!

Unfortunately, there can be only 1 winner, and while 3 teams finished with the same record of 7-1, we had to go to the tie-breaker which was the fastest combined team time through the 75ft inflatable obstacle course...  And the winner was...  Team Botha!  Most of you will recognize the team captain as being RAC's own Autumn Verrier.  Be sure to give Autumn the props that she deserves the next time that you see her!

A highlight reel from this year's event is coming, so be sure to keep checking the home page.  Also once pictures are accumulated, check them out in our Facebook!

Never too early to start putting the pieces in place for your team next year, so keep an eye out for the 4th Annual RAC Olympics coming next summer!

Whiteboard

Starting in July, we will be implementing a weekly workout routine (this is in addition to our already fabulous class schedule) that anyone can come down and partake in.

It is simple.  The 1st part of every week in Studio A, you will see a designated workout on the whiteboard crafted by either Jess, JR, Brian or Autumn.  So if you are unable to make a class, or just looking to change up your routine or to supplement it, all you have to do is come on down and knock it out in your spare time.  Average workout will be between 30-45 minutes.

Red Rocks Boot Camp

Yes, that is right.  On Saturday, July 17th at 9am, Brian and Autumn will be hosting his Boot Camp off-site at the gorgeous location of Red Rocks. (This will take the place of both of their regularly scheduled Muscle and Boot Camp classes that day).

Sign up and reserve your spot today, simply send me an e-mail at ghollingsworth@riverfrontathleticclub.com or sign up at the front desk.

Meet at the Red Rocks parking lot, rain or shine and train at elevation with some of our best!

Green: A State of Mind

"But now, says the Once-ler, Now that you´re here, the word of the Lorax seems perfectly clear. UNLESS someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not."-Dr Seuss

The above quote is taken from a Dr. Seuss book, The Lorax, which is a classic tale that details the concept of over-consumption, demise and ends with a glimpse of hope for the future. I came across it while I was reading my daughter a bed-time story. I am constantly in awe with what can be learned when we take the time and see certain things through the eyes of children.  (Don't worry, I am not going to break into song "The Greatest Love of All" or anything)

Stories such as this cause reflection of internal factors as to what can be controlled. What started out as simply searching for cost savings in regard to the Xcel energy bill, quickly translated into a passion of making the Riverfront Athletic Club a green certified health club. If we each do our part and limit overall consumption, then benefits can be seen across the board. Here are just a few steps that the Riverfront Athletic Club has done in regard to energy savings:

~Dual level lighting and motion sensors installed to reduce light levels when natural light is available and turn-off lights when they are not in use.
~Connect the televisions in the cardio equipment into timed relays so they turn-off during non-business hours.
~Re-configure the lighting control system to better align the electrical loads of the facility with actual usage.
~Program HVAC system so that cooling during peak times of usage while maintaining a set temperature range avoiding constant fluctuation.

“Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple."-Dr. Seuss

You just need to know where to look and when to care. UNLESS..
